Don't get me wrong, the Indian head design is one of the best looking, but still I don't get the premiums on those things.

It all depends on if it has the "W" mintmark.

If they do not, then the price will be much, much lower.

How do we get a "W" mintmark Buffalo for sure. Do you only get one if you order a proof from the mint?

Yes, going forward only the proofs will have the W mintmark. The uncirculated W versions were a one-year only issue, in 2008.
